Don Thompson was born in Powell River, B.C., Canada on Jan. 18, 1940. He moved to Vancouver in 1960 where he began his career as a professional musician. During the period between 1960 and 1965 he appeared regularly with groups led by some of Vancouver's finest musicians including Dave Robbins, Fraser McPherson and Chris Gage. He was also a featured artist and bandleader on many CBC radio and TV shows appearing with such celebrities as Stan Getz, Barney Kessel and Ernestine Anderson.
In recent years Don has kept busy with his teaching at Humber College and numerous playing and composition projects. He has had ongoing playing relationships with Kenny Wheeler, Joanne Brackeen, Fred Hersch, John Abercrombie, Jim Hall and John Handy.
In February, 2020 Don was awarded the Canadian Jazz Masters Award at the Oscar Peterson International Jazz Festival “In Recognition of Artistic Excellence”.
The past few years have been very busy for Don with tours in Canada, Europe, Russia, Asia and Japan. These trips have made it impossible for him to maintain his position at Humber College but he continues to teach piano and composition privately in his home.
