The Dennis Kwok Jazz Orchestra celebrates the release of their debut album "Windward Bound", and presents the world premiere performance of a 5-movement suite for chamber orchestra and jazz rhythm section by Toronto-based composer and saxophonist Brenden Varty, as part of the TD Discovery Series Special Projects.

The Dennis Kwok Jazz Orchestra exclusively features artists under 35 years of age and blends elements from third stream jazz, modern jazz, contemporary classical and traditional big band. "Windward Bound" was composed as a 6-movement suite for the 18-piece jazz ensemble plus woodwind soloist (performing on 10 different instruments!).

The Dennis Kwok Jazz Orchestra (DKJO) is a Toronto-based contemporary big band committed to the creation, performance, and showcase of new works composed by the next generation of artists. The group is led by and comprises of 19 of the finest performers, composers and arrangers under 35 in Southern Ontario. Formed in early 2017, DKJO has since developed a repertoire of over 20 original works from within the band and has performed in many of Toronto's iconic venues including Lula Lounge, Gallery 345 and Burdock. They have also made appearances at the Toronto Undergraduate Jazz Festival as well as had collaborations with JUNO award winners, Allison Au, and Alex Dean.

Dennis Kwok is a multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, performer, and composer based in Toronto. Originally from Calgary, his interest in jazz and improvised music lead him to further studies at Humber College in Toronto where he completed his Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance and Composition). As a saxophonist and woodwind doubler, he has studied under the likes of Pat Labarbera, Kirk MacDonald, Nina Martini-Dorey, Richard Thomson, Nadina Mackie Jackson and David Sussman among others. His versatility has led him to involvement in contrasting genres from the orchestra to the funk band including collaborations with JUNO award winners, Allison Au, Alex Dean and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Dennis is currently an active performer in the Greater Toronto Area as a freelancer, bandleader, and member of Mason Victoria’s Sonuskapos Jazz Orchestra, and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. He is also sought-after as an arranger and composer for his experience writing for varying groups from folk-chamber ensemble to big band.
